Thirty-one miles northeast of Sacramento, nestled
cozily among the picturesque foothills of Placer
County lies the quaint little village of Newcastle.
Just an off-ramp's distance away from today's busy
Interstate 80, a visit to Newcastle is like returning to
the days of yester-year when traffic was less
maddening and life's pace was much slower. A
small handful of shops and businesses clustered
around the usually quiet village square belies the fact that for many years this
was the scene of a constant hubbub of activity when horse drawn wagons would
haul their loads of peaches, plums, cherries and pears to the town's packing
sheds which are today occupied by an antique shop, a bookstore, and other
businesses. Those were the days when the hills surrounding Newcastle were
dotted not by the modern homes of today, but rather by neat, checkerboard fruit
orchards stretching off in all directions as far as the eye could see, a period when
Newcastle was the fruit producing capital of California.
